My mother’s cataract operation
My 87 years old mother plays the piano every day for her pleasure. But recently she has complained about her weak eyesight because of her eye cataract. Those with cataracts often have difficulty in appreciating colors and changes in contrast, driving, reading, recognizing faces, and coping with glare from bright lights. In order to recover this situation, she decided to undergo an operation. I went to the Showa Univ. Hospital in Kohoku word with her and the doctor explained to us about the operation and the schedule. What is cataract? A cataract is a clouding of the lens inside the eyes which leads to a decrease in vision. It is the most common cause of blindness and is conventionally treated with surgery. Visual loss occurs because the clouding of the lenses obstruct light from passing and being focused on the retina at the back of the eyes. The most common cause is due to aging. How to operate １．Instill anesthesia into the eye(local anesthesia) before the operation. (Patient needs to stare at one point during the operation.) ２．Sterilize around eyes well and cut a boundary of iris of the eye and the white of eyes open around 3mm ３．Remove one's old film lens in a circle and draw out the contents using a supersonic wave cataract surgery device from there ４．Insert the crystalline lens afterward, and an operation is ended. It is 10-15 minutes until the end after cutting a boundary of iris. About the hospital The hospital is located in Kohhoku New Town, 5 Km far from my house. This hospital is affiliated with Showa medical Univ., established in 2001. The Blue Line subway is used to access the hospital. It takes about 30 min in total from my house. From the nearest station called Center MInami to the hospital, it is easy to walk through a pedestrian precinct(walkway). Many new commercial buildings are built and trees and flowers are planted on both sides of the rord. These are pictures from the station to the hospital.
